Its because of people that abuse animals it makes me ashamed to be human and i would happily go and sort those people out myself but i don't fancy jail so i just hope the animals can do it..and soon.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-19571156494223685562008-09-26T14:40:00.000-07:002008-09-26T14:40:00.000-07:00while i have entertained fantasies of this nature,...while i have entertained fantasies of this nature, i.e. the revolt of nonhuman animals against their oppressors, my first thought, along with that of another poster and addressed in bekoff's email excerpt, is that the rise in frequency (sheer numbers as opposed to percentages) of such incidents obviously would be attributable to human population growth and encroachment. i have not read the actual article but will do so now. i would assume the author addresses this question; if not, it is indeed rather silly. at any rate - thanks for bringing it to my attention!Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00356708092053820117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-58105750066369343922008-09-26T14:39:00.000-07:002008-09-26T14:39:00.000-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00356708092053820117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-39654070989984971262008-09-24T03:55:00.000-07:002008-09-24T03:55:00.000-07:00Ethologist Marc Bekoff sent me this email (posted ...Ethologist Marc Bekoff sent me this email (posted w/ his permission):

hi mat ... i thought your blog was very good ... i am indeed cautious because we don't have the details yet ... there seems to be revenge in certain instances but we need to be careful because we need to know if for example if the actual % of attacks has increased because we'd expect an increase in frequency in revenge/attacks because of the increase in the frequency of human-animal encounters ...

and as you point out:

"If it turns out animals are attacking and killing humans as retaliation for our arrogant attitude, my fear is that people will see this as all the more reason to massacre them in even greater numbers. When humans feel in immediate danger, their capacity for reflective thinking basically defaults to the fight instinct—it's me or him, us against them—rather than compassion."

as i'm writing in my new book The animals' manifesto we must be very careful about all of this ... i've done a lot of interviews since and will do some tv/radio stuff and i am cautious ... this of course is not to say animals don't have the cognitive and emotional capacities for revenge ... they do ... but i need more before i think that there's some worldwide "pan species rebellion" (as you put it) going on ...

all best, marc
--

Homepage: http://literati.net/Bekoff
Marc Bekoff and Jane Goodall (EETA): www.ethologicalethics.orgMat Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12162399434918547569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-3866837227600748142008-09-23T19:10:00.000-07:002008-09-23T19:10:00.000-07:00Regarding the last comment about Saudi Arabia, thi...Regarding the last comment about Saudi Arabia, this is a country that does not give its citizens most of political freedoms guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Capital punishment and other penalties are often administered without due process. The government of Saudi Arabia has also been criticized for its oppression of religious and political minorities, homosexuality, and women. The US imports about 1.5 million barrels per day of crude oil from Saudi Arabia, amounting to about 17% our crude oil imports. Ergo, our country financially supports a dictatorship.Mat Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12162399434918547569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-38516186479172530442008-09-23T16:11:00.000-07:002008-09-23T16:11:00.000-07:00If you have a brain larger than a pea, then you un...If you have a brain larger than a pea, then you understand that the any increase in violence is tied directly to human encroachment upon animal habitat and increased reporting.

If you want to know what motivated the 9/11 terrorists, why don't you just read what they write? It certainly has nothing to do with "horrendous living conditions endured by millions in the Persian Gulf". Their living conditions are far above those of most people in the rest of the world, and certainly so in Saudi Arabia where 15 of the 19 hijackers were from.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27660291.post-48246777970385621262008-09-23T16:03:00.000-07:002008-09-23T16:03:00.000-07:00This is remarkably stupid and just embarassing to ...This is remarkably stupid and just embarassing to the animal rights cause.
